Since OS 3.X has been released for the iPhone and iPod Touch, the application Auto-Wifi is not working properly any more. Auto-Wifi is extraordinarily convenient for hotspots (e.g. in companies), where you need firstly to log-in via a web page – even with OS 3.x the iPhone does not remember your credentials and asks for login each and every time on a known hotspot. Auto-Wifi does this automatically for you (btw. in an extraordinary fast way) if you saved your credentials once.

The version published on June 12th 2009 is however not working with OS 3.x. The developer subzero.eu states that Apple has been contacted but since almost 2 months there is no update available yet.

Boingo, which has a completely different business model than auto-wifi (it is known as a service for flatrate wifi access) must only be launched once(!) on the iPhone / iPod Touch. There is no need for any registration. Run it once (open & close) and don’t uninstall it. But there is no need to touch this application again, if you don’t want to use their services. The funny thing is that after this the application auto-wifi works again in the same convenient way than before the update to OS 3x. This is of particular interest as I did not find any resources on the net explaining why this works and Apple claims that they ensure through their policy how to publish applications on the iTunes AppStore that no application is allowed to leave a general footprint, what seems however to be the case for Boingo.

I tested this workaround on an iPhone 3GS and an iPod Touch 2nd generation only. I’m glad to hear if it works out for others too.
